Your dog deserves the best! The best quality of life. The best cuddles. The best toys. The best walkies. And of course, the best food. Yet, all too often, the pet food that occupies the shelves of supermarkets is a far cry from giving them the nutrition that they need to love long, happy and healthy lives. Your dog’s body is a temple, too, which is why they need healthy and nutritionally balanced food made from real ingredients that are ethically sourced.

The good news for dog lovers is that there are many such brands out there like https://barkingheads.co.uk/ that take your pet’s nutrition seriously. But what happens when the cupboards are bare and the shops are closed? What do we do when we don’t have access to good quality pet food. Don’t go to the all-night garage to get the cheap and nasty stuff… Just raid the fridge!

Why dogs can eat human food

Genetically speaking, there’s actually very little that separates your loving pet from the wild wolf. One of the only differences is that dogs have evolved to eat a broader range of foods including vegetables cereals and starches, while wolves have remained carnivorous pack hunters.

The good news for pet lovers is that it’s easy to throw together nutritious and pet-friendly meals with what you have lying around in the fridge or cupboards. Any of the following foods is just fine for dogs.

Eggs

So long as they’re properly cooked, eggs can be a great source of protein, healthy fats and vitamin D for your pampered pooch. Fry in a little olive oil and scramble them up real good and watch your dog gobble them up!

Peanut butter

As any vegan athlete or bodybuilder will tell you, peanut butter is a fantastic way to get easy access to plant-based proteins, healthy fats and fibre. Add a dollop to your dog’s dinner, spread it over thin slices of apple or carrot or you can even mix with rolled oats and bake into pet-friendly cookies.

Don’t worry, you can have some, too!

Spinach

Popeye isn’t the only one who benefits from spinach and other leafy greens. Another great source of plant proteins, spinach also contains fibre for digestive health as well as iron, antioxidants, beta-carotene and  vitamins A, B, C, and K. Your dog will love it fresh or steamed and mixed in with meat or fish.

Porridge

Yup, this healthy breakfast staple is perfectly edible for dogs. In fact, it’s a great source of fibre as well as key minerals like phosphorus, magnesium and iron. Pampered pets can enjoy it made with water, or cow’s milk (but be wary of using plant milks as these can be high in sugar or salt). Just make sure that the oats are well cooked (raw oats can be tricky to chew, swallow and digest) and that the porridge isn’t too hot.

Popcorn

Finally, did you know that your dig can also join you in enjoying your favourite cinema snack? Popcorn is (in moderation) perfectly safe for dogs and a reliable source of phosphorous, magnesium, and calcium. Just be sure to pick out all unpopped kernels before serving as these can be a choking hazard.

As you can see, raising the cupboards can be far cheaper and healthier than feeding your dog substandard food!
